Aditya Birla Sun Life Mutual Fund is a fund house that has brought for investors a number of schemes to invest in to help them reach their investment goals. This is basically a joint venture between Aditya Birla Group and Sun Life Financial Inc. of Canada. Established in the year 1994, this MF launched a scheme named Aditya Birla Sun Life Medium Term Plan to help investors earn regular income along with capital appreciation. The assets under this scheme are mainly invested in the debt securities such that the macaulay duration of the portfolio lies between 3 to 4 years. This fund is currently managed jointly by Mr. Maneesh Dangi and Ms. Sunaina Da Cunha.
This scheme is one of the medium duration debt schemes which is open-ended. It has invested 37.18% of the assets in AA rated securities, 25.28% in A and Below rated securities, and the rest in others.
The top ten companies in whose debt instruments it has invested majorly are 7.17% GOI 2028, Sprit Infrapower and Multiventures 2021, Adilink Infra & Multitrading 2020, Adani Infra (India) 2019, Piramal Enterprises 2019, SP Imperial Star 2022, Wadhawan Global Capital 2020, 2% RKN Retail Pvt. 2020, RKN Retail Pvt. 2020, and 6.84% GOI 2022 with the percentage of assets allocated in them being 11.49, 6.39, 4.99, 4.81, 3.66, 3.59, 3.07, 2.82, 2.41, and 2.36, respectively.
The one year return generated by this scheme is 3.87 which is higher than the returns generated by the category and benchmark VR Bond. The three and five year returns provided by this scheme are 7.40% and 8.89% respectively which are again higher than the other two. These returns are as on October 26th. 2018. Even the seven year return rate yielded by this scheme is 9.40% which is better than 7.62% and 8.29% generated by the benchmark and its category. Performance-wise this scheme has given positive results.
Now, let’s see how the fund is managed by the fund managers in terms of risk. The standard deviation of this scheme is 2.07 which is lower than its benchmark and category’s SD which is 2.27 and 2.42. Even the Beta of the scheme which is 0.81 is less than its category’s Beta which is 0.94. These two factors state that this scheme is likely to fluctuate with the changes in the mutual fund market. The Sharpe ratio of the scheme is 0.43 which is again better than the other two. This shows that the scheme is capable of generating better returns with the risk undertaken.
